The 16th-ranked University of Akron men’s soccer team traveled to Buffalo Friday evening and brought home a victory after beating the Bulls by a score of 1-0.
With the win, the Zips improved to 11-3-2 overall and moved to first place in the Mid-American Conference with a 3-0-1 mark.
The Zips’ lone goal came in the 51st minute when freshman Steve Zakuani shot from the top of the box. Buffalo keeper Daniel Bell attempted to make the save, but the ball bounced away from him and Matt Tutich scored off the rebound.
The Zips dominated the stat sheet as they outshot the Bulls 12-5 including a margin of 7-1 in shots on goal.
It was a good result for us, head coach Caleb Porter said. We went on the road against a physical, tough team. The win puts us in a good position in the conference; we’re alone at the top.
Buffalo currently sits in second place in the MAC with a 3-1-0 record. Both the Zips and the Bulls have only one conference game left before the end of the regular season. If the Zips win their final game against Western Michigan, Akron will host the MAC tournament.
We bounced back after a devastating loss last Wednesday and were able to get the win, Porter said. We learned some valuable lessons this week and we’ll be able to carry them with us.
Porter knows what lies ahead for his team. A lot is at stake, Porter said. Both games are on the road and will be tough tests. If we take care of business, we will host the MAC tournament.
The Zips will travel to face Oakland, the current leader of the Summit League, Wednesday night and then Western Michigan Saturday afternoon for the final regular season game of the year.
