About three or four years ago my favorite Mexican restaurant, El Canelo, went out of business, leaving me without a go-to restaurant for Mexican food. I tried some other Mexican restaurants in the area but none of them were as good as El Canelo.

I thought I would never find a place comparable until I ate at Tres Potrillos. Located at 115 Montrose West Avenue in Akron, Tres Potrillos is now my go-to place for Mexican cuisine.

One of the many elements that define a Mexican restaurant is the quality of the chips and salsa. At Tres Potrillos, the chips and salsa are quite good. Some days the salsa is spicier than others but the addition heat from the salsa is not overwhelming by any means. Besides the chips and salsa here are some of the dishes that you should try at this restaurant.

The first item on my agenda is a staple at any Mexican restaurant and it is the beef tacos. The tacos here are served in hard shells and are a solid choice if you are looking for a proven crowd pleaser. The tacos are topped with lettuce and cheese, but I always put salsa on them as well.

The next item should only be ordered if you are incredibly hungry and that is flautas. Flautas can best be described as a deep-fried enchilada.

At Tres Potrillos, the flautas are served in pairs which extend off the edge of the plate and you have your choice of chicken or beef. They are served over a bed of Mexican rice and topped off with cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole.

I tried the burrito tapatio for the first time last week and it’s going into my regular rotation. This burrito is basically a huge fajita.

You get your choice of chicken or beef and the burrito is stuffed with grilled peppers and onions, tomatoes and mushrooms. This dish is finished with melted cheese, lettuce and sour cream. It’s a good idea to add salsa.

For my final recommendation, I am using the philosophy of saving the best for last. The burritos deluxe are definitely my favorite entrée on the Tres Portrillos menu.

The burritos deluxe are a combination of two burritos; one chicken and one beef. They are served with beans lettuce, tomato and sour cream. If you also pour salsa over the top of these burritos, you will add an important component to the overall flavor of the dish.

Now that you know what to order let’s discuss the pricing and service. The most expensive item that I mentioned were the flautas, at a modest $8.70. Most of the entrées are priced under $10.

The last thing that I want to mention is the incredible service that this establishment offers. Even when they are busy it will not take more than an hour to dine here. So if you are looking to go south of the border for dinner, head north on I-77 to Tres Potrillos.
