The University of Akron women’s basketball team travelled to Toledo over the weekend and failed to bring home a win, losing to the Rockets 72-50.
The Rockets (10-8, 3-3 Mid-American Conference) took advantage of UA turnovers and went on a 23-2 over a five-minute span to jump ahead of the Zips (5-16, 0-6 MAC), giving them their 10th consecutive loss. The Zips have yet to win a conference game this year.
I thought we played a good first half, we held them to 25 points, head coach Jodi Kest said. We could have had a bigger lead if people would have made open shots, but we were happy going into the half tied.
Freshman Keyla Snowden led the Zips with 19 points, scoring in double-digits for the fifth straight game.
Snowden also hit our 3-pointers, which moved her into fourth place on UA’s single season list for most three’s with 59. Snowden only needs four more 3-pointers to tie the record and has 10 regular season games and the Mid-American Conference tournament to do so.
She’s the best three point shooter on the team and we give her the opportunity to be successful, Kest said. She can shoot the deep three and we try to look for her as a first option, especially when they’re zoning us. She has a very good game and she keeps continuing to get better everyday.
Freshman Kara Murphy also scored in double figures for the Zips with 10 points. She also pulled in eight rebounds and five assists.
The Zips next game is tonight against Central Michigan.
They’re a very, very athletic team. I’m very impressed with their work ethic, Kest said. They work very hard and do a lot of good things right. We can’t underestimate them based on their record, but at the same time they can’t underestimate us as a team when we’re all on the same page.
