A few weeks ago, Don Imus lost his job for referring to the Rutgers women’s basketball team as nappy-headed hos. Not long before that happened, however, Rush Limbaugh referred to Barack Obama as the magic Negro on his radio show.
He still has his job.
Imus’s comment placed him under a storm of controversy, yet Limbaugh’s remarks have gone largely unnoticed.
Limbaugh even played a parody of the song Puff the Magic Dragon, aptly titled Barack the Magic Negro, on his show.
Not only did he insult Obama, but he viciously attacked the political left, saying that those of you white people out there who are supporting Barack Obama, you are racists.
He then said that white racism still exists and that it resides with the left, where the plantation mentality still resides.
Limbaugh claims that by supporting Obama, white people are just trying to assuage (their) white guilt. According to him, Obama’s white supporters are exhibiting racism because they know he’s not a real black.
Unbelievable. And to think, most people believe being black or white is only about skin color.
Limbaugh’s comments are both insulting and unfounded – they have been for years. Last week, he may have gone to a new extreme.
On April 19, Limbaugh declared that Seung-hui Cho was obviously a liberal because the student was railing against the rich. Limbaugh even said that he was just pointing out a fact, as though his assumptions of Cho’s political standings could be proven.
Maybe there has been no call for Limbaugh to lose his job because we’ve grown used to hearing his offensive comments. But Imus was known to make these comments, too. In 1993, Imus referred to black PBS anchor Gwen Ifill as a cleaning lady. He also called publishers Simon and Schuster as thieving Jews and has been known to refer to Arabs as ragheads.
However, his nappy-headed hos comment was apparently a step over the line.
It’s not clear where that line is, but I guess Limbaugh hasn’t reached it yet.
So what would Limbaugh have to say to stir up as much controversy as Imus did? Would he merely have to insult a women’s sports team? What if he attacked widows of the Sept. 11 attacks? Oh wait, he did that. How about attacking a cancer patient? Yep, he did that, too, when he criticized John Edwards’s wife after learning she had breast cancer.
So who could take Limbaugh down? There is probably only one person powerful enough to do it … one person with the fortitude to tackle Limbaugh … one person with enough public favor to bring him down.
Oprah.
If Limbaugh were to openly attack or criticize her humanitarian efforts, Oprah would have no choice but to take him out.
Let’s all hope that happens soon.
