All Hail The Heartbreaker by the Spill Canvas blared in my car, and simultaneously my sister and I whipped our necks around to look at each other in confusion.

This tune that we had listened to for years on a CD was now playing on the radio.

It was June 1, the day of The Spill Canvas concert and my interview with Joe, the drummer of the band.

I anxiously entered The House of Blues in Cleveland and called The Spill Canvas’s manager Daryl Bentfield to let him know I was ready.

Just minutes later, Joe walked out of the vintage looking doors and greeted me with a cool smile.

We went up to the balcony so we could avoid the gawking from the by standing ticket buyers for the concert, which was going to be rocking and rolling just hours after our interview.

The Buchtelite: You guys have toured a lot, how many times have you played in Cleveland?

Joe Beck: I think this is really our second time, we played here about a month and a half ago with Yellowcard. Other than that, we’ve played here about three years ago. So, I guess three times, but this is our first time headlining.

TB: What is your favorite band you’ve played with so far?

JB: Ah, that’s a tough one. We’ve played with s many great bands. We’re a big fan of this band called As Tall as Lions. We’ve become good friends with them by touring with them, and they’re just an amazing band.

TB: It must get pretty boring going from city to city during tours, so what do you guys do to pass the time?

JB: Well, we’re pretty big nerds so we all have our laptops and a couple of the guys are pretty big video gamers. I’m a pretty big sports fan, so I try and play basketball. Just getting your mind off the music thing sometimes really helps.

TB: What is the bands favorite song to play?

JB: I think individually we have tons of favorite ones, for different reasons. Whether it be you get to rock out during a song or you get to sit back and really relax. Probably right now, our collective favorite song to play is All Over You, just because the crowd just goes nuts for it. It’s fun, but that just makes it really fun.

TB: What did it feel like to hit the Top 10 of Fuse and MTV?

JB: It’s very surreal. That would be a good word to describe it. We’re very to new to this, I guess you could say, success. It’s very weird because we came from South Dakota, you don’t exactly expect this to happen.

TB: If you could choose any band to play with who would it be and why?

JB: It would be all super old bands like Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and Nick would probably say Van Morrison. Just a ton of old and classic music. It’s just very timeless and the kind of music that we’re in to.

The Spill Canvas played their hearts out for an hour for their Northeast Ohio fans. They played various songs such as Hush Hush, All Over You and my personal favorite, The Tide.

Their shows guarantee a great crowd energy, awesome music and a chance to see the band play at a smaller venue before they get big.

With their kind of talent, it’s bound to happen.
