Swine flu hits Akron

The university confirmed two cases of the H1N1 virus on campus as of Oct. 18 via Zipmail.

In many ways, the cases are similar to what we see with the seasonal flu; it’s just coming earlier than normal, Diane Fashinpaur, director of student health services, said.

The rate of people reporting flu-like symptoms is elevated for this time of year. The city of Akron Health Department is reporting the same elevation across the broader community; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are reporting it across the nation.

They are recovering well, usually within three to five days, Fashinpaur said.

The majority of cases we are seeing in Student Health Services are reporting mild to moderate symptoms.

At the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UA is not testing for the virus.

Students, faculty and staff are asked to call Student Health Services at 330-972-7808 to report flu symptoms.
