You should’ve known they couldn’t keep me away from writing about the Zips in the newspaper.
I started law school this semester, so I have no time to write columns of real journalistic value.
Let’s get down to business…
Watch for Jabari Arthur to keep climbing the draft boards as we near April. His size and physicality make it unfair for defensive backs in the Mid-American Conference. Arthur is in the top 10 in the nation in receptions per game and yards per game. And let’s not forget, he was a quarterback until a few years ago, so his route-running and hands should improve.
MAC experts are taking notice of Bryan Williams, the Zips’ first-year running back. The Buchtel High School graduate has blazing speed.
He would be having a monster year if UA’s offensive line was opening more holes. Most of Williams’ yards so far have come on runs to the outside. When (not if) the young offensive line improves its run-blocking, Williams should solidify his spot as a top rusher in the conference. He should have a break-out game against Temple on Saturday.
Hold off on buying a Chris Jacquemain jersey. He scorched Western Michigan for 389 yards and four touchdowns, but continued to make bone-headed plays.
Carlton Jackson is the best quarterback, but Brookhart has had to discipline him twice for violating team rules. It’s not ideal to have the orchestrator of your offense skipping team meetings and whatnot.
If I had it my way, true freshman Matt Rodgers is the starter (assuming he has built off the progress he made in fall camp), Jackson converts to wide receiver (where several BCS schools offered him a scholarship to play) and Jacquemain becomes the league’s best backup.
