Last Thursday, the Zips Programming Network hosted a pre-Homecoming event in the Student Union. Planned by ZPN president Cynthia Ahonen, the Red Carpet Pre-Show Party provided food and games? including a presentation of the Homecoming court, a hotdog eating contest and an indoor cornhole contest.
We are very excited for homecoming this year, said Ahonen. We had a great success last year.
I thought last year’s homecoming was more fun than my high school homecoming.
The student organization Akron C.A.R.E.S., the Akron chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, was also involved.
We like to encourage participation, Ahonen said. We want to enhance collegiate experiences. We want the students to have Akron Pride and we’re concerned with them liking campus now.
Nick Krolikowsky, the ZPN Traditional Events chairperson, agreed.
We want more students to come to events outside of class, he said. I wish more students would come to things, students don’t take advantage of events.
Krolikowsky is responsible for the events that lead up to the Homecoming dance. He said the idea was to expand homecoming festivities.
The theme for this year’s Homecoming was Hollywood, another suggestion made reality by Krolkowsky.
Other events for Homecoming Week included the Movie Munchies Mania themed food Day in the Student Union, the SAMS Rock Alike and singer/songwriter Jared Campbell.
The second Movie Munchies Mania was an all-day Family Fun Fest and included a Fashion Show.
The Movie Munchies Mania – themed food day allowed us to have some fun and get students excited for the dance, said Krolikowsky. We’re just trying to have fun and encourage students to come to our events.
Akron C.A.R.E.S. president Christen Balash spoke about her group’s purpose for participating in the Red Carpet Pre-Show Party.
We are trying to create awareness in the students, since October is Breast Cancer Month, she said.
We have four strategic directions – education about the American Cancer Society, survivorship in our college community, advocacy and Relay for Life.
Ahonen encourages all students to participate in all aspects of college life.
Remember that Akron gives a good social experience, as well as a good educational experience, she said. Get involved.
