UA’s senior vice president, provost and chief operating officer Michael Sherman gave the address. The three main topics discussed were student success, academic quality and organizational effectiveness.

When students succeed, we succeed, Sherman said. In 2011, the University will be offering better evening, weekend and summer opportunities. Students should be able to graduate in no more than six years.

The school is being given $680,000 in new scholarship programs. To be awarded these scholarships, a student must have an ACT score of at least 21. For the Success Scholarship, a new or continuing student must have at least a 3.0 GPA. $100,000 will be given to adult students throughout the next year.

Sherman stated, We must increase our faculty members by 200 by 2020. Akron is only looking to hire teachers who are skilled in their subject and who will do a thoroughly good job. They are also trying to get more support for women and minorities.

Music, art, theatre, dance and arts administration were greatly praised at this address. They truly are a front door to The University of Akron, said Sherman.

Surely these changes will encourage more students to attend the University and to graduate sooner. Sherman stated, The University of Akron is a great place to be. It becomes more than a place. It becomes an experience: your Akron experience.
