An essential quality of a distinguished professor is the love of teaching. I look forward [to] coming here every morning at 8:00 or 8:30 and staying here until 5:30 or 6:00. I mostly love discussing science and other issues with my students, and [as I said] before, not only teaching them, but learning from their questions and their inquiries, Wesdemiotis said.

Prior to his career at the University of Akron, Wesdemiotis earned his P.h.D at the Berlin Institute of Technology in Germany and was a research associate at Cornell University. In 1988, Wesdemiotis was drawn to the University of Akron when he noticed an ad in the Chemical and Engineering News, the magazine of the American Chemical Society. After applying to all available positions, the University of Akron invited Wesdemiotis for an interview. I was impressed by the fact that they were giving me an instrument to start my studies. I had a few other offers, but this was the best one, Wesdemiotis said.

Although Wesdemiotis made several achievements in his field, he stressed that the most important thing to come of his research was the thirty-five students that earned their P.h.D’s and Master’s Degrees. I think that’s as big or a bigger achievement, Wesdemiotis said.
