Sports Preview (10-27-16)
October 26, 2016
Men’s Soccer–
The University of Akron men’s soccer team will take the weekend off as it rests up to play the Ohio State Buckeyes on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Game time will be at 7 p.m. in Columbus.
The Zips, 7-5-2, have struggled in comparison to recent years. On the road they have especially struggled, going 2-4-1. The Buckeyes have also struggled this season with a 5-10-1 overall record and 4-4-1 home record.
Ohio State came to Akron last season in a game that resulted in an exciting 3-3 tie. Adam Najem scored the game-tying goal with just under 14 minutes remaining in the game.
The Zips have four games left in the season, starting with the Buckeyes game on Wednesday.
Women’s Soccer–
The Akron women’s soccer team will play this Thursday in an afternoon clash versus Buffalo (12 p.m.).
The Zips enter with a 4-10-4 record, and have won just one conference game this season. Buffalo is just 6-7-3, and 3-4-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
It will be interesting to see senior Annabelle Hegeman starting in goal for her final regular season game, or if freshman Samara Yurchak will continue to see playing time. Yurchak has a .909 save percentage in her five games played, while Hegeman has a respectable .725 save percentage in 16 games.
The Zips younger players have been key for the team this season, as freshmen Chloe Allen (six goals) and Ashley Amato (four goals) lead the team in scoring.
It is currently unknown how many more games the Zips will have, as the team will play in the MAC Tournament starting next week.
Volleyball-
The Zips volleyball team has had nearly a week of rest since it picked up its first win of the season on Saturday versus Central Michigan, and the team has prepared for a pair of big Mid-American Conference games this weekend.
First, the team will host Kent State on Friday at 7 p.m. The Golden Flashes defeated the Zips 3-1 on Sept. 24 in Kent. Kent State is 12-11 on the season and 5-5 in conference play. They are coming off a 3-2 loss to Northern Illinois last Saturday.
Then, on Saturday, the Zips will host the Ohio Bobcats at 5 p.m. The Bobcats are 11-11 on the season and 7-3 in the MAC. Akron fell to Ohio 3-0 on Sept. 23 in Athens.
These are the last two home games for the Zips this season. They will wrap up their road schedule with four road games in November.
