The launch of the 2007 women’s volleyball season began in late August when the Zips swept through their first tournament, the Temple Invitational in Pennsylvania, with a 4-0 record. After capturing second place this past weekend at the Mississippi Sheraton Hilton Invitational, the team has its work cut out for them. The toughest competition came from one of the top-30 ranked teams, Mississippi’s own Ole Miss with a 0-3 loss.
Sophomores Brionna Patterson and Kara Smith were awarded All-Tournament honors for their performances.
The Zips (6-1) are off to their best start in the past two seasons, but head coach Mike Sweitzer knows that the team can only take it one week at a time.
We were picked last in the MAC East Division Championship, so we have a lot of work ahead of us, he said.
The Zips have key players at each skill position that they will rely on in order to continue their strong start to the season.
Patterson and sophomore Liz Martin are both excellent outside hitters. However, freshman middleback Jess Antosz has the top kill percentage on the team. Shayla Gilbert, the only returning senior, will contribute heavily to the defense.
The women head to North Carolina Thursday for the Wolfpack Invitational to face Dartmouth, East Carolina and North Carolina State.
