The University of Akron women’s soccer team extended its current winning streak to four games with victories over Cleveland State on Friday and Eastern Kentucky on Sunday.
The Zips beat Cleveland State 1-0 but had to wait until the 65th minute to break the 0-0 tie.
Junior Jess Pomfret assisted Britni Back’s goal that poked inside the right post on a close range shot, and it would be the only points UA needed to secure the victory.
We are doing a good job of finding the back of the net, head coach Catherine Byrne said.
That statement is most true for Back.
The sophomore has scored three straight game-winning goals for the Zips and has four goals total in the last three games.
Our offense has given us the opportunity to score each game, Byrne said.
Back has capitalized on the opportunities by having five shots — all on goal– this weekend resulting in two more goals which gave her five for the season.
Sunday’s win was very similar to Friday’s as the women defeated Eastern Kentucky 1-0 on a game-winning goal from Back in the 16th minute of play.
The similarities didn’t end there.
Goalkeeper Kristin Wilson recorded her third shutout of the season bringing her career total to 14 and making her the career shut-out leader for UA.
Wilson has made huge plays for us, Byrne said. When she’s needed, she can step up. She kept us on the streak we are on.
The Zips are 5-0-1 this season as they near the end of their non-conference schedule and coach Byrne likes where the team is heading with two games left before Mid-American Conference play begins.
This is an opportune time to assess where you’re at, she said. We hope these wins build confidence for our team that we can take straight to MAC play.
The UA women will face Northern Colorado in Greenley, Co. on Friday and Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. on Sunday.
