The University of Akron and Kent State University volleyball programs have teamed up to fight breast cancer.
During the next three weeks, each team will donate money based on the number of digs recorded in the month of October to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Dig for the Cure fundraiser.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation was established by Nancey G. Brinker in 1982 after she made a promise to her sister Susan, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36, to help the fight against the disease and search for the cure.
A dig is passing a spiked or rapidly hit ball, slang for the art of passing an attacked ball close to the floor, according to volleyball.com.
Assistant KSU volleyball coach Genoa Moxley said it was a great match-up to do something for breast cancer awareness together.
It’s something that we as women need to be aware of, Moxley said. We wanted to bring this foundation into our organization at Kent to help find a cure.
Moxley said she contacted the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Northeast Ohio affiliate in Cleveland to get the process started.
Assitant Zips volleyball coach Jenn Snyder said there are many ways to donate at UA in the next three weeks.
Fans can pick up pledge sheets at all Zips home games and donate per dig or a flat rate.
Donations can also be made on the foundation’s Web site www.komen.org or by contacting either team’s volleyball office.
The Zips volleyball team will also have a booth set up in the Student Union on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m to 1:00 p.m.
All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation in an attempt to rase awareness and fight the cure of breast cancer.
A check will be presented by both teams’ captains when the Zips play at Kent State Oct. 27.
