You might not be aware of this, but the men’s soccer team won the Mid-American Conference championship on Sunday.
You might not know this because it really wasn’t publicized. As matter of fact, even if you did know it was going on, fininding the score was next to impossible on the internet.
GoZips.com, the official athletic site of the University of Akron, had a story about the men’s basketball team losing on Saturday as the main story. The only mention of the MAC championship game was at the end of the story from the soccer teams last game.
In a year like this, when the football team is a huge dissapointment and the basketball team is at the very beginning of their season, shouldn’t the university be promoting this soccer team above everything else?
This is a team that in 2005 was the No. 1 team in the nation and went to the Elite 8 in the NCAA tournament.
For years, Akron has been a powerhouse in the college soccer world. They barely missed a beat when they changed coaches last year. That would have killed lesser teams. Not Akron, though.
They keep on chugging and no one gives them the credit they deserve.
Akron should be celebrating today the way they did when the football team won the MAC title in 2005.
The Zips now have an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament and to some national attention.
Since many people aren’t aware, I just want to congratulate the team on a great season. Believe it or not, some of us know about you and care.
