Five vehicles were stolen over the weekend on University of Akron property and two more were stolen near campus, according to a Zipmail sent out Monday.

The vehicles stolen, according to the email, were taken from the Ocasek Natatorium parking lot, the Martin Center parking lot and the Exchange Street Parking Deck.

UAPD Police Chief Callahan said that all the cars had one characteristic in common: they were either Honda Accords or Chrysler/Dodge minivans.

Sometimes it’s just the make of the car, Callahan said. The design of certain cars, especially Honda Accords, makes them easier than others to jump start and steal.

According to Callahan, four of the five stolen cars have been found.

We’ve been scouring the area all night and all day, trying to locate the stolen vehicles, he said. We’ll continue to add extra patrolling to the areas to prevent these sort of occurrences.

To help prevent theft, Callahan asked students to make sure their cars are locked, not to leave anything of value in plain view in the car and to park in well-lit areas.

I realize these might seem like obvious things, Callahan said. But we need people to try to follow them.

He also said it may be hard to find a parking space in a well-lit area, but police are doing everything they can to make it safer for students.

I just hope it’s short-lived, he said. That maybe it’s a weekend spree that some juveniles are pulling.
