We knew he’d be in Columbus at his place of employment, said Akron Police information officer Lt. Rick Edwards. It was payday and we knew he’d be down there collecting a check.

Butts was originally charged with two counts of rape, two counts of aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of felonious assault and two counts of kidnapping.

According to an Akron Police report released on Jan. 22, Butts will be additionally charged with a rape, burglary, and kidnapping. Detectives reportedly linked Butts to physical evidence from the rape and kidnapping of a 19 year-old University of Akron student reported on Sept. 21.

While pursuing Butts, police utilized The U.S. Marshals’ Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Southern Ohio Fugitive Arrest Strike Team.

Edwards said Akron uses the U.S. Marshal’s office frequently after exhausting their own efforts.

Usually we use them on our bigger cases such as murder and rape, Edwards said.

According to Edwards, the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force is comprised of local officers, including a few from APD.

Butts was originally being pursued in connection to the rape and attack reported Nov. 4 on Carroll St., and a second rape reported Jan. 7 on Kling St.
