Valentine’s Day brings visions of love, romance and lots of spending. So what is one to do to show their special someone how much they love them on a student budget?
Mrs. Temo, of Temo’s Candy on E. Exchange Street, said that they are very busy this time of year. While she couldn’t pinpoint what the best selling candy was, she did say that people buy anything chocolate.
Their treats start at $11.95.
Mr. Temo said the clientele has changed over the 61 years he has been in buisness.
It used to be male but now it’s more like 55/45, he said.
Although he doesn’t receive very many students, he gets administration from UA to stop in.
His best selling item is his two-pound chocolate heart. However, there is the choice of the one-pound heart that will only set students back $12.95.
If flowers are more your forte, than you may want to head down to City Center Florist and see manager Paul Stitt.
Stitt said that on average, people spend around $60.00 on Valentine’s Day. Stitt, who is very busy this time of year, said he sees both male and female last minute shoppers.
A good last minute idea that Stitts suggested was a mixed floral, which he said costs about $25.00 at least. Those looking for an even cheaper route can go with a wrapped bouquet, which is cash and carry. It costs a minimum of $6.98.
If chocolate and flowers are not explosive enough for your Valentine’s Day, head to Ambiance, The Store For Lovers. There might be that something special to finish off the night with a bang.
Katherine Schneider, marketing director for Ambiance, said that Feb.13 and 14 are their busiest days.
As for their clientele, On these days its probably 80 percent male, Schneider said.
Their best-selling items at this time are a piece of lingerie or one of the pre-packaged gift sets. According to Schneider, there are about a dozen different kits just for Valentine’s Day.
Some are mild, some are wild; they are basically a little adventure in a box, she said.
What might be included in one of these pleasure sets? The example given by Schneider was the naughty and nice set.
It includes a furry eye mask, a little rubber tickler whip, bedroom dice in which one of the die tells you what to do and the other die tells you where to do it, tea light candles, little guide to romance and how to do all of those things, she said.
Her suggestion for a student budget: one of these kits, they range in price from $12.00 to $175.00. They really fit any budget.
They are a different way to say I love you, I care about you, I desire you, she said.
Everyone wants the same thing at the end of the night on Valentine’s Day.
