Graduate schools from around the world came to the university Tuesday to inform students of their programs.

From 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., over 107 programs and graduate schools presented their information to students through a recruitment fair in the Student Union Ballroom.

The All-Ohio Graduate/Professional Recruitment Fair, hosted by the University of Akron Graduate School, let students know of different graduate school opportunities.

The intent of the recruitment fair was to present graduate options from the state of Ohio to University of Akron students and to prevent brain drain.

Brain drain is the loss of intellectual resources from the region due to movement to other regions.

The whole point of this was to keep our graduates here in the state of Ohio, so we invited all of the Ohio institutions, Coordinator of Graduate Admissions, Tracy McCune said.

Most of the schools at the fair were from Ohio, but there were others from nearby states as well, such as Northern Illinois University and West Virginia University.

Some of the graduate schools and programs represented at the fair were from other countries, including Across the Pond, a graduate study program in Great Britain, and the University of St. Andrews from Scotland.

Normally, graduate recruitment events would be held at larger institutions, but this year the University Graduate School hosted its own event.

We felt that we should do this ourselves and offer it to the other institutions and present these opportunities to our students, McCune said.

This was the first recruitment fair hosted by the Graduate School. The turnout for the event was more than expected.

Everything seems to be really well-organized; there is a lot of traffic. It has been really great so far, and definitely compares to other graduate and professional fairs I have attended, Evan Henderson, from the Morris College of Law at the Ohio State University said of the event.

The event allowed students to see many opportunities for further education and why advanced degrees may be beneficial.

In today’s tough economic times, higher degrees will help students get into better positions and prepare them for the upcoming world market. Cheryl Slusarczyk, administrative assistant department of polymer engineering at the University of Akron said.

There were many different institutions from all over Ohio and the surrounding region at the recruitment fair. Several of the institutions had multiple graduate schools in attendance including the Ohio State University, Case Western University and the University of Pittsburgh. All of the University of Akron Graduate School programs were at the Recruitment Fair.
