The University of Akron’s Ski and Snowboard Club will travel to Pennsylvania’s Seven Springs Mountain Resort Feb. 16, just in time to capitalize on the excitement of the Winter Olympics.

The trip is open to everyone. The cost is $47, which includes a Greyhound bus ride to and from the resort, drinks and snacks on the bus and a ski lift ticket. It is first-come, first-serve.

The Ski and Snowboard Club is a cheap way to enjoy an awesome sport with friends, according to club president Alex Freeman, a mechanical polymer engineering major.

The club is unlike traditional sports clubs in that it does not have a set schedule for meetings. Members do not ski together as a club, so Freeman recommends bringing friends on the trips.

Students interested in joining can choose among three location options, each in a different part of the country.

Boston Mills/Brandywine is a local option for members to choose. This trip allows participants to ski or board every Saturday until the ground is no longer covered in those white flakes.

While the club is for skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels, Freeman feels this option is best for beginners.

It’s not too expensive and you’re guaranteed at least five sessions with a lesson, said Freeman. It’s a great way to start out and learn how to ski or board.

Another option for prospective club members, and Freeman’s favorite, is a trip out West in January, before the start of the spring semester. The trip occurred earlier this year when the club went to Winter Park Ski Resort in Winter Park, Colo.

We definitely have the most fun and memories with the out West trip, whether it’s battling the altitude, getting stuck in 10-feet deep powder or just trying to get down the mountain in one piece, Freeman said. Skiing is tiring by itself, but when you do it for a week straight at 16,000 feet in chest-deep powder with a hangover, you’re completely exhausted by the end of the week.

The final option, and the only one still open for registration for the 2009-2010 season, is the upcoming Seven Springs trip.

Students can select any number of trips to attend. There are no fees to join the club; members just pay for the trips they take.
