It seems impossible to stop University of Akron students from making a difference in the community.

This weekend, the culprits were from UA’s Hospitality Club.

The members volunteered their time to the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank’s Hard Hats and High Heels fundraiser gala on Saturday with ice and food carving.

According to Isaac DeLamatre, the president of the Hospitality Club, about 400 people attended the gala. The event provided a sneak preview of the food bank’s new warehouse and included a silent auction fundraiser.

According to DeLamatre, a subgroup of the club is the ice-carving team, which DeLamatre is also a part of. The hospitality club’s job was to provide ice and food carvings to the event.

We were approached by one of the organizers, and they asked us if they wanted to do ice and vegetable carving, he said. It was really good publicity, so we said yes.

Three students participated in the carving he said.

We did two carvings, said DeLamatre. One was a bird sitting on top of a cornucopia and the other was one sitting on top of a pumpkin.

DeLamatre said the hospitality club is completely student-run.

We pretty much practice the skills we are being taught, and it’s available for us to put on events, give dinners, fundraising exercises, he said. With the fundraising money we take field trips.

DeLamatre also mentioned that the Hospitality Club was holding a university-wide ice-carving contest on the weekend of Jan. 17.

The Hospitality Club has hosted many previous events and fundraisers at the University of Akron. The organization’s most recent event was a fundraiser brunch in October, at the Crystal Room in Galucci Hall.

If they (the food bank) do a fundraiser again, we’d love to do it again, DeLamatre said. It was real fun, and the event itself was amazing.

We enjoy giving back to the community.

We are especially grateful to students for their civic involvement and donation of time and talent, said the food bank Committee Chair Jan Wojno in a press release. It is a joy to be able to work with a fine committee of volunteers who are dedicated to helping others in our community.

It was a lot of fun carving publicly, especially for a good cause, DeLamatre said. I’d definitely like to do it more often.
