There is a smell of an acoustic guitar hanging around the bar, a very rare thing among the Akron scene.

They could call it Northside because it is on top of the local music attraction, not in the sense that it outplays other acts or venues around town but because it has a stomping ground staple of some monumental musicians.

A grand glean of blues hangs among the moonlit snare and the bar itself has a charming flare.

The vibe throughout the Northside bar is a considerable diamond in the streets of Akron.

A great deal of clubs and pubs around Akron claim to have the best atmosphere among the bar circuit, but as we all know some of those places end up being overwhelming with their approach to entertainment.

In these early weeks of the semester the best time can usually be found with a small group of friends at a more low-key hangout. On the other hand, the beginning of the spring term can be a supreme time to destroy livers and kill brain cells without having to worry about finals or gargantuan projects.

In this respect, the Northside can accompany the starting gate for a night’s festivities, a nice warm-up for a stumble down Main Street.

There is an old-school jukebox in the bar that reverberates the melodic overtones of tranquility ringing throughout the bar as a variety of musical acts take the stage every night.

Tuesday night is open mic night; for all aspiring musicians this would be a place to call the beginning of a legendary career. Also, in case of a last-minute need for a meal, Northside has a very fine organic restaurant (open till about 10:30 p.m.) with a great range of delicacies to select from that can increase the quality of the night. If you bring a valid student I.D. there is a 10 percent discount on the delectable entrees the Northside serves up.

The superb variety of red wines will enhance any dish that may be needed before a splurge of alcohol ensues.

The bar itself is located right next to the Y-bridge in the same plaza as Luigi’s. So, it is not a hike that will end up draining the gas tank, nor is it great hassle to find a parking space, unlike many downtown arenas that a map is needed to find.

There is a decent selection of brews to keep the palate quenched during this relaxing venture into booze. As one benevolent bartender Rachel Guerra said, There are great drink prices and good company.

Spend any night of the week in Northside and it is guaranteed to expand your local musical venue horizons.

It will certainly influence the way people evaluate bars and it will more than likely give people a new riff for the way they talk.

There is a jazz night every Thursday that will impress even if it is not the normal groove you walk.

A good chance there might be a jam that encompasses the song of your soul, or at least make you tap your heel.

Not many bars can really compete with the easy-going feel this bar evokes, which is similar to the six-pack that is snagged after a long day’s work; it is a way to comfortably kick back with some great tunes while burning a square and catching a buzz in the frosty air.
