On Friday, Jan. 14, The University of Akron Army Reserve Officer Training Corp welcomed new University of Akron students who are interested in joining the dedicated cadets for the spring semester.
Each semester, the Army ROTC conducts an orientation to welcome cadets and inform them of what the program has to offer.
Introducing the new arrival students was the Cadet Battalion Commander William Gilkinson and Cadet Executive Officer Alex McArthur. As every ROTC student is aware, any student who is interested in the program does not have to sign a contract before joining. Everyone has a chance to test the program out and then make a final decision later. Students are able to participate in every event, physical training sessions and military science classes. If they are interested in contracting, they are required to have a 2.5 GPA and pass the Army Physical Fitness Test.
That morning the new students were introduced, welcomed with open arms and got a chance to learn about the benefits and the education that ROTC offers through the orientation lab.
The orientation included financial benefits, combat-related training, education and even ROTC student organizations. After the presentation, the students were broken down into different teams, where they were welcomed by experienced contracted cadets and got a chance to get to know their team members. The assigned teams were meant as a way to keep new students interested and not a stranger to the program. By having team members, everyone is able to look after each other for the duration of the semester.
At the end of the Military Lab, the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Battalion Professor of Military Science Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Corbett welcomed two new members to the ROTC family by conducting a contracting ceremony for Junior Cadet Tiffany Kleines and Sophomore Cadet Vic Tersigni.
