Brad Wright has quietly become one of the elite golfers in Mid-American Conference.
Wright is sixth in the MAC in scoring average and is a major part of the current wave of success the team is enjoying.
The Zips are coming off a decisive victory at last weekend’s tri-match against Kent State and Miami (Ohio).
Wright has garnered a number of personal recogniction along the way.
Earning MAC Player of the Week honors has become second nature for Brad Wright and the University of Akron golf team.
Zips golfers have earned the award a record nine times this season. Wright has received the honor a team-leading four times. The sophomore credits a consistent approach for his string of success.
I’ve been very consistent with everything, he said. I’ve been able to keep the ball out of trouble and make putts when it matters.
Wright’s scoring average (73.16) and seven rounds under par also lead the team. Wright says his strict mental routine is a major factor.
I don’t really do anything special before a round, he said. I make sure to follow the same warmup every time, and really develop a strong game plan and stick to it.
Wright hopes Akron’s success against Kent State and Miami will translate into a strong team showing at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate at Firestone Country Club in Akron this Saturday, as well as at the MAC Championships the following week.
The cool thing about heading into the next two weeks is that we are playing our best golf right now, he said.
This past weekend we beat Kent by 21 strokes and proved that we are able to compete with anyone in the MAC. A strong performance this weekend will keep the momentum moving forward heading into the MAC (Tournament).
This weekend, the Zips will try to win their own tournament for the first time.
We are playing very good golf right now, head coach Tom Porten said. I feel we have a chance to win this event for the first time in school history, but it won’t be easy, as we have a very challenging group of teams coming in this weekend.
