If you live around in a neighborhood surrounding campus and want to be timely informed of crime in your area, it seems like you’re out of luck.
The University of Akron doesn’t seem too concerned about being timely. In fact, a Zipmail was sent out on Monday about an armed robbery on Carroll Street, right near Spicer Street, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
Students were not informed on Saturday, nor Sunday.
More than two days later, students were finally informed.
Let’s hammer that home. A female student was robbed by a man with a gun right across the street from campus late Friday night.
We weren’t notified until noon on Monday.
If UA were really concerned with the safety of its students, as the Zipmail claims, they would inform us in a timely manner.
You know, like the same day someone gets robbed. How long does it take to throw together a Zipmail? It shouldn’t take too long – whoever does it must be pretty good at it by now.
After all, the safety tips linked in the e-mail can only do so much. Surely programming the university’s emergency line into your phone is a good idea, but who has time to look through their contact list while they’re getting mugged?
What we really want, more than safety tips, is just to be informed. Finding out on Monday about a robbery that happened Saturday morning does little to keep us safe when we go out again on Saturday night.
Only if we’re well-informed and timely informed will we actually be able to consider safety issues as we walk around campus.
For students who live on Carroll or Spicer, UA’s belated information regarding Saturday’s robbery should be alarming.
After all, the university is required by law to inform students when crime like this happens.
Maybe the should obey the law, which also states that their notification be timely.
We’d appreciate it.
