Yoko Ono, former wife of John Lennon, is continuing their campaign for world peace.
Now through Sept. 7, the Myers School of Art will present the Yoko Ono Imagine Peace exhibit in Folk Hall. There is a gallery of Ono’s work, as well as an interactive piece of art called Cut Piece and a film series by Ono.
Before Lennon’s death, their original plan was a reverse War of the Worlds, said Kevin Concannon, Imagine Peace exhibition curator and UA associate professor. Lennon and Ono wanted to buy live air time and have someone run in and shout the war is over like in War of the Worlds.
However, this was never accomplished.
Ono’s work, though, is the embodiment of the same peace campaign that survived after Lennon’s death. In recent years, Ono has mounted an Imagine Peace campaign through her conceptual artwork.
She’s a conceptual artist and imagination is at the heart of her work, Concannon said. Much of her work asks the viewer to envision peace and understanding.
Films including The U.S. vs. John Lennon, Bottoms and Rape will be shown during the exhibit. Information can be found at www.sart.uakron.edu/news.
