On the other hand, is abortion a moral crime against God that rivals murder? Of course not.

Abortion is a cowardly way to make up for a mistake. It’s relying on a second wrong to make a right.

The thought that abortion is available weighs – perhaps subconsciously – in the back of many college students’ minds. It’s hard to say legal abortion promotes carelessness, but it certainly doesn’t discourage it.

I don’t want to preach, however. No one should judge someone for having an abortion unless they recognize the magnitude of such a decision.

In Jesus’ time, there were people similar to the extreme right wingers. They were called Pharisees, and they condemned everyone for anything. Although I consider abortion sinful, Jesus warned against judging others, a lesson that could well serve conservative pundits who strive to embarrass women considering abortion. How can you say to your brother, ‘let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? (Luke 6:42)

I experienced an abortion dilemma of my own a few weeks ago. Before you ask, no, it wasn’t my kid. But a good friend conceived a child with a man eight years older than she, a man she didn’t love.

Talk about putting your politics to the test.

I advised she keep the baby, despite the fact that it would mean postponing her college career for at least a few semesters, the loss of the social life she enjoyed and the incredible fury from her parents.

My friend decided to keep the baby.

It’s a tough decision, but keeping a child under such duress is one of the most courageous acts today in American society. It is an incredibly selfless choice that requires supreme bravery.

I agree with hardcore right-wingers who want abortion to be illegal. They need to remember, however, not to judge a woman until you empathize with her situation.
