The University of Akron women’s basketball team lost on the road at Dayton Sunday afternoon by a score of 85-64
The Zips were led by sophomore Riana Miller who recorded a double-double in the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.
I was happy to see Riana with a double-double, head coach Jodi Kest said. She wasn’t playing up to par in the first couple games but has been practicing hard and getting better.
Sarah Tokodi and Kara Murphy also played well for the Zips.
Tokodi scored 14 points and added three rebounds and five assists while Murphy scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Zips, however, had trouble defending the post.
They couldn’t do much to stop Dayton center Nikki Oakland who posted a double-double of her own with 32 points and 10 rebounds. She scored the first 14 points of the game for Dayton.
We gave up too many points inside, Kest said. You can’t allow a player to score 32 points inside. They played hard and shot the ball well.
Dayton’s Kathy Guin also added 18 points off the bench.
The Zips held only two leads in the game, the last coming just 2:33 into the first half.
They shot just 38 percent on field goals compared to 48 for the Flyers.
The Zips’ next game is Wednesday night at St. Francis after which they will enter a five-game homespan, their longest of the season.
