When students write for the newspaper it’s common practice to make a phone call in order to obtain information. Recently, when making three separate calls to different people, companies and organizations we were received with rude customer service and abruptly hung up on.
We called two stores to ask about sales on Valentines Day and a campus office regarding another story and both after saying they didn’t want to talk hung up before we could say that fine, thanks for your time.
Now some of us have experience with customer service here, however everyone knows the age-old saying the customer is always right. Well, apparently when the customer is from a newspaper, they are wrong.
When we call and ask if you have a moment to speak on something, it doesn’t mean whoever answers gets to shout no thank you and suddenly hang up before we can respond. It is as if we are twisting your arm behind your back and demanding you speak with us. If you have no comment simply say so.
The rush of Valentine’s Day puts stress on everyone, but that doesn’t mean someone elses stress has to affect other peoples days so much.
At the Buchtelite, we are used to people not wanting to talk, or having no comment on certain issues-every newspaper does. However, being cordial won’t make your day worse.
Be polite and remember that when one customer has a bad experience they tell all of their friends about the bad service. Just think how many ‘friends’ a news service can inform.
