Akron will open its football season in Fall 2026 looking to translate the offseason progress unfolding right now into results on the field.
The Zips have multiple receivers with game experience returning to the roster and have added a strong slate of younger players and transfers who have begun to adapt to the system and the culture. This new combination is creating excitement in the off season.
The University of Akron’s wide receiver coach, J.D. Brookhart, is enthusiastic about the Zips football program based on the off-season work taking place during the winter months.
“I feel good about the team overall, but I feel even better about the receiver room,” Brookhart said. “The competition, the work ethic and the understanding of the offense have all taken a big step.”
Brookhart said that the mix of returning, transfer and new players has helped training become more competitive and productive.
“They push each other every day,” he said. “When you have guys competing for reps instead of just filling spots, the whole offense benefits.”
The coaching staff has emphasized timing and consistency in the passing game, areas Brookhart believes will translate directly into improved offensive production.
“A quarterback needs trust in his receivers – that when the ball is in the air, we will come down with the ball,” Brookhart said. “We’re getting to the point where routes are precise, and guys know the playbook better than ever. That changes everything.”
While the Zips continue building culture across the roster, Brookhart said receiver development often accelerates offensive growth.
“When that position group plays fast and confident, it opens up the entire playbook,” he said. “That’s when an offense becomes dangerous.”
Fans can come out and cheer on the receivers and the entire team at its first home game against the Robert Morris Colonials at InfoCision Stadium on Saturday, September 12.
