Akron was out-rebounded during the game. They also committed more turnovers, yet still were able to stay within five points for most of the game. Matt, add appropriate stats here!
In the first half, Akron and Bowling Green exchanged blows. The lead swayed back and forth before UA stormed out to a seven-point lead at the 8:22 mark. Bowling Green, however, would work their way back from the deficit and tie the game before the end of the half at 28-28.
Bowling Green held momentum going into the break, using it early in the second half to advance by four points. Akron was unable to come back, even with 14 minutes left to play in the game.
UA would, however, cut the lead to two with just 44 seconds left in the game. Bowling Green’s Jasmine Matthews and Jessica Slagle knocked down a combined three free throws to ice the game for the Falcons.
Saturday’s game was the second time the Zips had come close to beating BG, but had fallen just short. The first time around happened in the second conference game of the year when Akron traveled to Bowling Green, held the lead the majority of the contest, but were the victims of a comeback, ending the game at 62-58.
The loss does not affect the Zips in the standings, as UA is No. 6. Akron will next play No. 2 Miami on the road in part of a two-game road trip that will see the Zips play at Kent State also.
