RED Dance Company Premiers at Daum

October 31, 2011
RED Company opened Oct. 28 at Daum Theatre with an almost sold-out crowd. The first performance was called Weeding, which described “the inner beast within us, survival of the fittest,” as described in the program. It kept my attention because it started off with a ritual towards the ball and then it became fighting with other for it. The costumes for the dancers where a light brown color with the makeup highlighting their eyes.

Cancer Survivor Directs "I Need More Time. Thanks!"

October 27, 2011
“I Need More Time! Thanks!” written by Yulia Gray and directed by Caorl Eustey, begins with a woman who finds a lump in her breast. From that point on, the audience is taken on a journey with her from the time she discovers the abnormality to the decision that so many woman face. Will I call the doctor? Should I call the doctor? What is the next step? Do I really want to know what this is or is it easier to ignore it? “A lot of people are afraid of knowing,” Eustey said. “But knowing is the first step to survival.”

Haunted house holds meaning for UA students

October 26, 2011
It’s almost Halloween, and for most of us, this means assembling costumes, carving pumpkins, candy, and wild parties. But for a select few, October is about more than dressing in a zombie-version of your favorite TV personality. For Dave Shonk, junior at the University of Akron, Halloween means one thing only: haunted houses.

October 20, 2011

Popular Halloween costumes

October 19, 2011
Halloween comes once a year, so why not go all out? Playing it safe is not an option for most people. College students are known for their creative costumes as well as the witty ones. Rob Lehr from Akron Design and Costume says many college kids are buying multiple costumes for their Halloween parties.

"Glass Castle" moves student

October 13, 2011
At first, “The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls does not seem to be any different from other standard assigned readings. It is the story of Walls’ childhood; she grew up extremely poor and in conditions probably fitting the category of child abuse. Along with her seemingly mentally ill mother and alcoholic father, she moved constantly because her father was convinced the FBI was after them.

Film fest adds new media class work

October 13, 2011
Since Rob Lucas founded the Akron Independent Film and Video Festival in 2002, the event has gone through several transformations. “This was the first year that we incorporated video games," Alana Gustafson, director of Outreach for Akron Film, said. "I think it is going to be so interactive, especially in the technology age. People who come to the event for the films will like the games as well. We are hoping that people will really take to the video games. [Introducing video games] is something that is kind of unheard of, especially within the film industry and festivals.”

Comedian George Wallace returns to Akron

October 11, 2011
When first notified with the news that I was to interview Akron University Alumni and Comedian George Wallace, I was extremely nervous. I had never interviewed a celebrity before and was unsure what to expect. Anxiously, I dialed the number to Wallace’s agent. She gave me his personal number and told me that he would be expecting my call.

Lantern Fest illuminates the autumn night

October 10, 2011
Last Saturday, Crouse and Kim Streets were transformed into a dimly lit, gypsy-like parade of families, friends, performers, artists and characters for the annual Don Drumm Studios Light-Up Lantern Festival. This is the third year for the annual festival, and it has gotten more strange and exciting each time. This year’s theme was “Storybooks,” and artists designed their lanterns, costumes and booths to match this theme. Upon entering Crouse Street, visitors were immediately greeted by a large stage with a band playing folksy, vaudeville music. In fact, there were four different areas with 15 different bands rotating between them so that there was always music to add to the ambiance of the night.

MOMIX mesperizes audiences

October 9, 2011
The colorful, awe- inspiring dance illusions of MOMIX “Botanica” roused a standing ovation from the audience Saturday night at Akron’s E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. The magical movements of “Botanica” were part of a collaborative effort by The University of Akron and DanceCleveland. The University of Akron dance program began the collaboration of this event with DanceCleveland over two years ago. It was decided by both organizations that a multifaceted performance with non-traditional dance moves was ideal for their audience. Both organizations agreed that the MOMIX dance company would fit the bill.

This Thursday through Sunday, numerous guests will be flocking to the Akron Art Museum for the 2011 Akron Film and Pixel Festival. This will be the first time that the festival will bring in writers, actors and filmmakers for question and answer sessions after the viewings. "I feel like having professional directors, writers, producers and more gives film fans the opportunity to connect with professional filmmakers, learn more about their craft and have greater appreciation for film,” co-director Rob Lucas said.

Unique watershed event rushes to Folk Hall parking lot

October 6, 2011
The south parking lot behind Folk Hall (Lot 47) will be getting a transformation this weekend with your help. Students from the Meyer School of Art, Environmental Akron and the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers will all collaborate to help create a surface contour map on the south parking lot on Friday and Saturday. The drawing of the map will be a temporary artwork made out of water based and nontoxic paint which will draw attention to the ways in which the parking lot functions.

Wild ride skateboard auction glides into Akron

October 6, 2011
For the past week, skateboards have been appearing on the walls outside the printmaking studio in the upper atrium gallery at the Myers School of Art. Students are still turning in skateboards for the third-annual Wild Ride Skateboard auction, and the collection is anticipated to reach over 100 skateboards.

Akron native brings unorthodox music philosophy full circle

October 4, 2011
On a rainy afternoon in Akron, it isn’t hard to imagine why Ralph Carney moved away to San Francisco over 20 years ago. At the same time, it is easy to understand why he still calls Akron home and returns here as much as possible. “There is a dismal beauty that inhabits Akron much of the year, and in between those days of sunshine, a lot of great music can be written,” Carney said. It is an odd statement to say the least, as his newest offering, “Serious Jass Project 2,” is a traditional collection of jazz standards, none of which were written by the artist. Carney instead focuses on performing the music. He plays saxophone and clarinet, and considers himself a multi-instrumentalist.

Cari Miller—love Akron, love the environment

October 3, 2011
Cari Miller juggles the roles of being a mother of three children, a writer, an environmentalist and an artist all at once, and is now working in her studio in Summit Artspace. The first thing that many people see upon arriving at her studio is an array of suns, formed into diverse shapes and painted in many colors. The suns, which are vivid and exiting, are a favorite motif for Miller. She has named her website "Sunthing Special."

Age is only a number

September 28, 2011
Art comes in many forms, and Betty Russ, at the age of 84, makes her life a work of art. She currently resides off of Turkeyfoot Road in Akron. Russ, who is vibrant and energetic, found her calling at the age of 18 after she broke her high school’s long distance swimming record by 55 seconds. This record-breaking time quickly made her an All-Star swimmer.

There is a wolf in the gallery!

September 22, 2011
This is what students heard murmured through Folk Hall last week, as the gallery was being prepared up for the new contemporary photography show. One could have been sure that this was not a photography show; a full-sized, stuffed wolf was indeed standing alert in the middle of the gallery. How was this not a sculpture show? Peeking further in past the workers, one could see a large piece that stretched across the whole wall of the lower atrium that was undoubtedly a printmaking piece. The supposed “contemporary photography” show almost appeared to be, instead, a strange juxtaposition of other art mediums.

"Almost, Maine" sure to uplift audiences

September 22, 2011
Never having seen a campus production, and being somewhat of a stage veteran myself, my expectations for Almost, Maine, I must admit, were low. However, I am happy to say that those low expectations were lifted through the roof and shattered by stellar performances and a wonderful script. First time director, Miranda Roth, has true talent with the stage. Almost, Maine is a series of separate love stories tied together by a small town, and what turns out to be a seemingly magical phenomenon, the northern lights. Each scene tells a brief story of different couple’s triumphs, and failures in love.

Composer brings moving musical to the University of Akron

August 17, 2011
When asked why audiences should come see “The Gospel According to Tammy Faye,” Musical Director and Composer JT Buck said, “ It is a life story that lends itself really well to singing, dancing and theatre. Tammy Faye is a very theatrical character, very larger than life. There is a lot more to her story than most people know. It is worth the audience’s time to come and see two hours of a story that they thought they knew.”
