On Wednesday, the board of trustees agreed to increase the number of credit hours for full-time students from 15 to 16.
This now means those students who take 16 credit hours will pay the same amount as someone who takes 12 credit hours.
Vice president of finance and administration John Case said that the reason behind this move was that it is simply, the right thing to do.
This move will cost the university $1.1 million in income in the next academic year, something that Case said is seen as a part of the budget process.
It’s just part of our budget process. We make decisions that are strategic every year and we just have to put it in our budget model and balance the budget accordingly, Case said.
The new tuition model will be put into effect for the fall 2009 semester.
However, the cost of tuition has not been decided yet.
Students who were at the University of Akron’s main campus before June 2002 will pay $17 more per credit hour for the upcoming fall semester.
Students who were taking 16 credit hours already will see a drop in their tuition.
Currently, Ohio residents pay $4,492.25 for 16 credit hours while students taking 15 credit hours pay $4,341.87.
Students who take 15 credit hours in fall and spring semesters are unable to reach the 128 credits needed for graduation in four years.
We think that in order for students to be able to graduate in four years or eight semesters paying one price, we decided listing our base price at 12 to 16 credit hours is the appropriate thing to do, Case said.
Currently, other Ohio universities list their full time course load to include 16 credit hours.
This includes Kent State University rates for a full-time student defined as 11 credit hours and up.
Cleveland State University is 12 to 16 credit hours and Bowling Green State University lists 11 through 18 credit hours.
