Major change

By Celeste Houmard, Writer

Many college students have wondered whether or not they chose the right major or minor. Students have to decide their major as teenagers, and sometimes it is hard to be sure that major was the right fit for them.

UA’s Counseling and Testing Center provided a workshop called “Not What I Wanted: Changing Majors” on April 19. The presentation stressed the importance of choosing a major.

According to this workshop, changing majors is a common scenario and there is nothing wrong with it.

To begin, one needs to know the reason behind deciding to change majors. One also should consider whether that major’s classes are boring, and how one’s grades currently are. Many other questions and considerations like these can be taken into account when deciding if a change is the right thing to do, including the short-term and long-term benefits of such a change.

To find the right major, it is important to define what hobbies, skills, likes and dislikes and see which major has similarities to those interests.

There are many different tools out there that can help make the decision easier; for example, websites like This website informs about different projected salaries, job opportunities, and information regarding many different majors.

UA’s Counseling and Testing Center is a great place to go when considering changing majors. Its office is located in 306 Simmons Hall. The Center offers different types of counseling, assessments, and educational workshops for all UA students.
