Women’s Soccer–

The University of Akron women’s soccer team was able to tie the Toledo Rockets on Friday, 1-1, but then dropped a match to Bowling Green on Sunday, 2-1.

The Zips fell to 3-7-2 on the season, and are now 0-2-2 in MAC play.

In Friday’s game versus Toledo, the Zips’ freshman defender Ashley Amato (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Amy Rogozinski, another freshman, assisted on the play.

Amato’s goal was scored with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation, and forced the game into overtime. The teams played two overtime periods before the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Zips were able to get five shots on goal against goalkeeper Katie Wilson. The Zips’ own goalkeeper, Annabelle Hegeman, was very busy stopping seven of the eight shots she faced.

Amato was able to find the back of the net again in Sunday’s game, scoring with just over seven minutes remaining to cut the Falcons’ lead to 2-1. Bowling Green scored in the third minute and 51st minute to get out to a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons recorded six shots on goal, while Akron had five.

The Zips will get back on the pitch Thursday, with a 7 p.m. match versus Kent State at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in Akron.

Women’s Volleyball–

The Zips volleyball team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend, losing to Buffalo and Toledo on its home court.

The Zips fell to 5-11 overall on the season, losing all four Mid-American Conference games so far.

On Thursday, the Zips fell to Buffalo, 3-2. The Zips went down 15-4 in the final, tie-breaking set. Patience Brown once again led the Zips in kills with 18, while Kayla Gwozdz recorded 15.

Akron then fell to Toledo on Saturday, 3-1. However, the match was a closely contested affair in which Toledo won the sets 25-20, 15-25, 25-21, and 25-23.

Gwozdz led the way with 14 kills, while Elya Karsner and Brown added 12 apiece.
The Zips will get back at it on Friday when they host Bowling Green at 7 p.m. in Akron, and then will stay home to play Miami University on Saturday, again, at 7 p.m.
