The University of Akron men’s golf team will travel to Spartanburg, SC, to participate in the Wofford Invitational the beginning of next week.
The team will look to build on an impressive fall season. They finished in the top-10 in every tournament they played in and won the Bellmont South Shootout at the Nashville Athletic Club in Nashville, Tenn.
Seniors Colin Clemente, Ryan Gutowski and Matt Considine lead the team.
Colin has been an anchor all year, head coach Nick Goetze said. He has been the core of the team. Ryan bas been solid and a staple in our lineup. I anticipate he’ll have a good spring. Matt didn’t play in the fall, but his off-season practice went well. He’s a good addition to our lineup competitively.
The team has already played in one tournament this spring, the Cleveland Palmetto Invitational.
After day one, the Zips were in 14th place and finished the tournament in 13th.
The course is extremely difficult so it was a big test for our guys, Goetze said. Not being able to get on the course was a big challenge for us. Hitting the greens was difficult and it was even harder to try and save shots. We didn’t have a good finish, and we accepted that because we’re patient. We’re hanging tough and easing into the spring.
The Zips will participate in the Wofford Invitational Monday, March 31 and April 1.
There will be a pretty solid field of competition and the course is a little easier than the course at the Palmetto, and fortunately we’ll be able to get on the course before heading down, Goetze said. Having played in one tournament already, I think we can finish in the top 3-4. That would be a solid finish.
Coming out of winter, it’s been a gradual transition to get back into our rhythm from the fall, head coach Nick Goetze said. We have a tournament every week until the MAC tournament and that will get us in a competitive rhythm.
The Mid-American Conference Championship is scheduled May 2-4.
