Friday evening, students gathered in The University of Akron’s Field House for the 2012 Relay For Life all night event.
According to Event Co-Chair Andrea Mazzocco, approximately 1,200 students, faculty and community members were in attendance.
“We honored 24 cancer survivors and their caregivers as well as raised $46,000 for the American Cancer Society,” said Mazzocco.
Teams from all different organizations, both affiliated with UA and unaffiliated, gathered at their campsites in the Field House under a fairy tales theme to raise money for cancer.
Though full of interactive events for participants, the event both aimed to raise awareness and honor those suffering from cancer.
The fundraising aspect of the event was meant to aid those facing cancer in the future as well as currently fighting the disease.
“The money [raised] will go towards lifesaving cancer research and helpful patient services,” said Mazzocco.
