Deacons overpower Zips to snap winning streak in Wake Forest
October 2, 2014
The Zips snapped a four-game winning streak in North Carolina by losing to Wake Forest 2-1.
The Demon Deacons (5-4-0) started the game hot and ready for the night’s matchup in the first half as both of their scores came in the first half of play. Akron (4-3-1) would try to counter in the second half, but ran out of gas as time expired, leaving the home team the victors.
The first goal came in the 32nd minute of play from Ian Harkes assisted on by Michael Gamble who scored the goal on a one on one situation that went through the Akron’s goal box. Minutes later, in the 38th minute the Zips would let another ball rest in the box as Ricky Grennsfelder shot the ball on the near side of the post and pass Akron’s goalie, Jake Fenlason for the Deacons’ second score. Akron would push for a comeback as the second half began and would even connect with the back of the net in the 59th minute as Richie Laryea sent the ball through the keeper’s legs, leaving the Zips behind one point.
The score would not change again and the game ended with a 2-1 advantage to Wake Forest. After the game, head coach Jared Embick said, “We weren’t ready to play, and they punished us in the first half. Even though we played better in the second half, we didn’t do enough to get the result. We have to learn and come ready to play Saturday against a good UAB team.”
Notes of the game:
Wake Forest outshot Akron 14-11 but both teams had six shots on goal. This match was also filled with fouls as Akron had nine fouls and two yellow cards while Wake Forest had 18 fouls and three yellow cards.
Next up:
The Zips will have to come mentally ready and focused for the intense home matchup against a UAB team who happens to be on a roll. UAB is ranked No. 21 and have won five straight matches. Look for senior midfielder Alex Clay and junior forward Freddy Ruiz to make a huge presence for the Blazers, as these two leaders have a combined nine goals and six assists. The Zips will have to tame the Blazers’ dynamic duo this weekend as they look to continue the home-unbeaten streak this season Saturday, Oct. 4 in Cub Cadet Field at 7:00 p.m.
Come lead the Zips to the match, in the traditional March To The Match, taking place at 5:45 p.m across from Stiles Field House on Vine Street.
