Tarantino’s revival weekend
April 25, 2016
The past week of the Zips Programming Network’s (ZPN) movie series featured two films from director Quentin Tarantino. Following its normal procedure of screening recently released films, ZPN aired “The Hateful Eight” and cult-classic “Pulp Fiction” as part of an additional throwback Thursday event.
Both movies were shown in the Student Union Theater. UA students attended the movies for free and enjoyed complimentary popcorn courtesy of ZPN.
“The Hateful Eight,” Tarantino’s latest film, tells the story of a bounty hunter and his bounty in the harsh wilderness of Wyoming several years after the American Civil War. ZPN screened the movie Friday night at 6 p.m. and Saturday night at 8 p.m.
The movie was shot entirely on 70mm film, which hasn’t been done in more than 20 years. This gave student viewers a chance to see a movie that used older technology to capture the color and cinematic depth of scenes. In contrast, many films today are shot digitally.
The movie was characteristic of Tarantino’s earlier work, which caused the audience to laugh at the over-the-top violence and absurdity.
“It’s nice to take a break from studying by watching someone get their head blown off,” said graduating engineering student Alan Sisarka. “It reminds me life could be a lot worse than finals week.”
Thursday night’s screening of “Pulp Fiction” drew nearly 40 students, many of whom saw the movie for their first time. ZPN decided to hold its throwback Thursday screening after members submitted movies to be voted upon.
Kyle Guinto made the trip from Brunswick, OH, to see “Pulp Fiction” on the silver screen with friends that attend UA. Guinto explained, “I’ve seen [Pulp Fiction] like twenty times. But never on a big screen.”
Anthropology major Megan Muniak said it was her first time seeing “Pulp Fiction” and would like it if more older movies were shown in the Student Union Theatre.
Next weekend ZPN will air the seventh installment in the Star Wars saga: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Screenings are at 8 p.m. on April 28, 29, and 30.
