The University of Akron football team’s losing streak continues after its defeat against the Bowling Green Falcons, 38-28, on Wednesday at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field in Akron. The Falcons were able to gut out a close game to get their first conference win of the season. Tallying another loss, the Zips move to a staggering 5-6 record on the season with just one more chance to become bowl eligible ahead of them.

This Zips offense had a sloppy performance, committing six turnovers in the game with three fumbles and three interceptions. Although they outgained the Falcons with 374 total yards it just was not enough to overcome a -4 turnover ratio.

Due to injuries, three different quarterbacks took snaps with one converting from receiver. Tra’von Chapman completed 7 out of 14 passes for just 58 yards and senior receiver Tyrell Goodman also took snaps under center but only completed four out of nine passes for 139 yards to go along with a touchdown and three interceptions.

Starting running back Van Edwards Jr. led the Zips with 84 yards on 20 carries and found the end zone once. Denzel jones served as a change of pace, also getting 13 touches for 66 yards.

Leading receiver Jerome Lane contributed by hauling in five receptions for 97 yards. Also, Jojo Natson caught three passes for 56 yards and Austin wolf added two catches for 39 yards.

Alvin Davis led the Zips in tackles for the second straight week with 13. Ulysees Gilbert lll also had 10 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. Deandre Scott came away with the only interception for Akron.

Bowling Green’s freshman quarterback, James Morgan, did not have much success against the Zips, only completing 10 out of 23 passes with one interception.

However, the Falcons did have success on the ground with two rushers eclipsing 100 yards. Junior Donovan Wilson rushed for 119 yards on 21 carries with one touchdown, and Fred Coppet also had 116 yards on just 16 carries with two touchdowns.

Junior receiver Teo Redding led the Falcons with three catches for 40 yards. Scott Miller also had three catches for 23 yards on the night.

The Zips had a late rally, scoring 17 consecutive points to tie the game at 28, but failed to sustain the momentum, throwing three interceptions on the last three possessions.

The Zips will try to become bowl eligible on the road Wednesday, Nov. 22 as they take on the Ohio Bobcats at Peden Stadium. The Bobcats are currently 5-1 in the division. Stay tuned as the Zips try to finish with a bang.
