Quarterback Tim Tebow: the NFL Christian splash bash

January 23, 2012
As the spring semester gets into full swing, the weather is getting bitter and tank tops, shorts and flip-flops are replaced by hoodies, sweatpants and Ugg boots. And just like the nice weather, the NFL football season is coming to a drastic close. In a season full of record-breaking quarterback play, none has made more of a splash than Tim Tebow. As a loyal ESPN watcher, no quarterback in the NFL has made more news since week six than Tebow. After putting up an 8-5 record as a starting quarterback for a team that was 1-4 before his first start, winning the AFC West and winning a playoff game, many could say that he has proved himself worthy of being able to play the position. That issue is still up for debate.

Different year, same story: Zips lose finale 68-19, finish season 1-11

November 30, 2011
After a 49-point loss to Western Michigan Friday, the Akron football program finds themselves in a similar spot to last year. The 68-19 loss caps off another one-win season for the Zips (1-11, 0-8 MAC), as UA failed to come away with a victory in the final eight weeks of the season.

Zips set to take on Buffalo

November 17, 2011
Both the Akron and Buffalo football programs have not won a game in over a month. That will change Saturday afternoon when the two teams meet at University of Buffalo Stadium looking for a much needed win. “We have a two-game season,” said Akron Head Coach Rob Ianello. “We have seniors we want to send out in the right way.”

Battle for the Wagon Wheel: Kent defeats Akron 35-3 at last home game

November 15, 2011
For Head Coach Darrell Hazell and the Kent State football program, Saturday ended in a similar fashion to its start, with possession of the Wagon Wheel. The Golden Flashes dominated a demoralized Akron team en route to 35-3 win, earning their second straight victory over the Zips and first win in Akron since 2003. “Today we had a tremendous performance in all three phases,” Hazell said. “We just keep scraping.”

Wagon Wheel up for grabs

November 14, 2011
The 2011 seasons for the Akron and Kent State football programs have strayed far from preseason expectations, as they have combined for four wins and 14 losses this year. The two teams will meet Saturday in their annual rivalry game, looking to shed some kind of light on otherwise forgettable seasons.

RedHawks pour it on Zips

November 8, 2011
A heavy rain fell on the field of Yager Stadium last Thursday night. The ensuing game between the Akron and Miami (Ohio) football teams followed a similar pattern as the downpour that continued to soak the field. The Zips (1-8, 0-5 MAC) could not stop the continuous offensive flow of the RedHawks (4-5, 3-2 MAC), who coasted to a 35-3 win.

Chisholm coming to his own at Akron

November 7, 2011
Around this time last season, Zips redshirt freshman running back Jawon Chisholm strolled the sidelines at Infocision Stadium-Summa Field. In Chisholm’s first season he witnessed the running back tandem of Alex Allen and Nate Burney rush for over 1,361 yards and eight touchdowns.

“Two” good to be true: Zips lose on failed two-point conversion

October 31, 2011
A roaring fourth quarter comeback for The University of Akron football team looked to be complete after a touchdown pass as time expired cut Central Michigan’s lead to 23-22. Then, the Zips went for two. Going for the win in the regulation, quarterback Clayton Moore sailed a pass over the outstretched arm of wideout A.J. Price, as the Zips’ hopes to win fell as quickly as they had come.

Two teams in desperate need of a win

October 26, 2011
The Akron and Central Michigan football teams have a combined three wins on the season. The two teams will meet Saturday at InfoCision Stadium. The Zips (1-6, 0-3 MAC) will host the Chippewas (2-6, 1-3 MAC) as both teams look to end three-game skids and pick up their first win in nearly a month.

Football ready to take on OU this Saturday

October 19, 2011

Save the last dance: Zips fall in homecoming, final non-league game

October 11, 2011
The University of Akron fell 27-17 to Florida International University in Saturday’s Homecoming football game. The loss, Akron’s last non-league contest of the year, drops the Zips to 1-5 as FIU moves to 4-2 on the year. "We don’t take any consolation in not winning,” Akron Head Coach Rob Ianello said. “We do take consolation in the fact that we are moving in the right direction.”

Eagles soar past Zips, 31-23 for fourth loss of the season

October 4, 2011
Despite a second-half touchdown run and pass by running back Jawon Chisholm, The University of Akron football team fell to Eastern Michigan Saturday 31-23 in Ypsilanti, Mich. Chisholm’s third straight 100-yard day was not enough for the Zips to pull of what could have been their first road victory in nearly three years. Akron (1-4, 0-2 MAC) was able to pull within a possession of Eastern Michigan (3-2, 1-0 MAC) with 3:18 to play but was unable to put the ball in the endzone on their final drive of the game.

Zips victorious over Keydets

September 27, 2011
