So you have some spare change or a large sum of money and you want to do some good. What can you do?
You could walk into the Student Union during lunchtime and throw it in the air while yelling “free lunch!” or you could donate to an organization that could turn it into more money for a worthy cause, like Akron C.A.R.E.S.
Akron C.A.R.E.S. is the University of Akron’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer with the American Cancer Society. Every year, the group puts on cancer education weeks, pink athletic events, cancer advocacy weeks and Relay For Life. By donating to Akron C.A.R.E.S., you could help offset the cost of hosting Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature event.
Here at UA, Relay is an 18-hour, overnight event where participants celebrate cancer survivors, remember those they have lost to this terrible disease and pledge to fight back so that one day no one will have to hear the words “you have cancer.”
Relay For Life at The University of Akron costs a lot of money to put on with all of the rentals and activities that take place during and after the event. Akron C.A.R.E.S. strives every year to put on the best event possible, and the costs can add up.
This week is the week of Relay For life itself. If you believe in fighting back against cancer or would like to give a charitable donation to the event, you can stop by our table set up in the Student Union all this week. You can also get more information on the American Cancer Society, how you can help and get involved and most importantly, more information on the various types of cancer that affect people every day.
If you’ve never been to a Relay For Life or American Cancer Society event, you are highly encouraged to come out on Friday to see the amazing event for yourself. Relay For Life begins Friday at 4 p.m. on the track across from Infocision Stadium.
