The University of Akron’s Campus Cupboard will hold a large-scale food distribution event geared toward students on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Simmons Hall lobby.
The two-hour time window provides an opportunity for students experiencing financial hardship to obtain nonperishable food items and hygiene products such as feminine products, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and other necessities for daily life and well-being.
Campus Cupboard also offers walk-in distribution times where all students can pick up necessities for their week. Walk-ins are each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and each Friday from 1:15 to 4 p.m. at Simmons Hall.
Students are asked to limit the quantity of items they pick up to ensure everyone has an opportunity to take advantage. For example, students may take up to three soups or one bottle of conditioner at a time.
According to Heather Barhorst, the head of Campus Cupboard, the program aims to make getting food and necessities easy for students in need. All students have to do is come to Simmons Hall and swipe their “Zipcard” at the iPad. No questions asked.
“We just count what goes in, what goes out,” Barhorst said.
She wants to encourage students who are feeling anxious about using the Campus Cupboard to stop in and get comfortable.
“You don’t have to talk to anyone,” she said. “I always encourage, if you’re scared, come and volunteer because it’s a great way to come and see how everything is.”
