Check yourself, Before you Rec yourself

For many students, working out provides a respite from an otherwise full schedule. Students drag themselves out of bed or away from their homework for hours of running, cycling or lifting weights. To some, this is a way of life; to others, it’s a way of justifying that study session over the weekend in which you ate an entire box of Krispy Kreme donuts.

Although most people tend to work out alone, there comes a time when communal exercise seems like a more appealing option. It’s much easier to go to the gym when there are other people suffering right next to you. The fitness services staff at The University of Akron’s rec center provides students with numerous opportunities to get their bodies moving throughout the week via their group exercise classes.

Currently, there are 20 different classes available, ranging from the ever-popular Zumba to the intense Cardio Xplosion. Students and faculty of all ages and ability levels are welcome to join the classes, and newcomers quickly become just as experienced as the grizzled veterans. The best part about these classes is that they are free – no additional fees are required. Just walk in and be prepared to feel the burn!

“I love that there is such a wide variety of classes offered at the UA Rec Center,” said senior Chelsea Wolpert. “From Yoga to Boot Camp, all of the classes are fun, challenging and free. It is a great way to have an interactive workout with friends. I would recommend the classes offered at the Rec to all students.”

One of the best examples is the ever-popular Indoor Cycling. This 45-minute session usually consists of four-to-five activities of varying intensities, including hills, sprints, and endurance cycles. The instructors tend to vary their workouts to keep them fresh. Occasionally, other exercises will be thrown in for variety, such as abdominal workouts or stretches.

“The Rec Center has a variety of programs perfect for different interests and intensities,” said freshman Kristin Weismantel. “I enjoy that they are welcoming of any fitness level with the goal to get fit in a fun way. I have attended Zumba and Cardio Dance and have loved them both.”

These classes are open to all ages and skill levels. Participants should prepare to sweat and feel those pounds gained by eating Valentine’s candy and fast food slide off of their bodies. The instructors and other UA students make it much easier for those New Year’s resolutions to become a reality in 2013.

Many students have found that these classes are a great fit for them.

“Group exercises at the Rec Center are something I always look forward to,” said freshman Leah Rosler. “I can always count on a great workout and a great time. We’re so fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of classes like these at UA.”

These are just some of the many students who are taking advantage of these great opportunities for fun and wellness. If you are looking for a break from your monotonous exercise routine, these exercise classes are certainly for you!
