UAPD offering rewards for tips
September 11, 2014
Students can receive up to $2,000 for reporting crime on campus with their smartphones.
The University of Akron Police Department is encouraging students to call, text and use the new app called TipSubmit Mobile to report crimes seen on campus.
Tips sent through this app are completely anonymous. Each tip is sent by text and the app is assigned a code that allows the police to see the message without revealing the phone number of the sender.
To send a tip via text message, users can dial the number 274637, beginning the message with ZIPTIP followed by their report. TipSubmit Mobile allows the user to select what police department they would like to contact. After selecting The University of Akron, the user fills out a form describing the crime.
Cash rewards are often $25 or $50. However, depending on the nature of the crime, the student can be rewarded as much as $2,000.
If a student sees anything suspicious, they should contact UAPD. Even seemingly unimportant tips can help police solve a case.
For more on how to make the campus a safer place, students are encouraged to visit www.uakron.edu/safety/.
