Their only win came on Friday when they beat the University of North Carolina Greensboro 4-0.
Sophomore pitcher Andrea Arney improved her record to 3-3, pitching a shutout and only giving up one hit in the contest.
On the offensive side of things, junior Alex Feltes went 3-for-3 with one run batted in, while junior Heather Bauer went 2-for-3 and also scored a run.
Akron faced Western Kentucky (7-8) in the second game of Friday’s double header losing 4-3.
Bauer pitched four innings, giving up three earned runs, striking out one and dropping her record to 1-3 on the season.
Overall, I am pleased with our pitching, UA head coach Julie Jones said. Arney pitched a gem of a game against UNCG. Heather was not as sharp as I have seen her against Western Kentucky, but she threw well.
Junior Monica Shorter led the offense, with two RBI going 1-for-2. Bauer also contributed by going 2-for-3 in the game.
The Zips put themselves in a position to tie it up late in the game, but, with good defense, WKU was able to pull out the win.
Saturday proved to be an unlucky day for the Zips as well after they lost both of their games in a double header.
Arney pitched six complete innings, giving up one earned run and three hits. However, a big second inning by Liberty gave them all the run support they needed and they beat Akron 3-1.
The Zips’ only run came in the fourth inning, when sophomore Allison Dorr was hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded to walk in the run.
Offensively, freshman Alissa Birkhimer led the team with hits going 2-for-4 while both juniors Bauer and Sarah Stromack went 1-for-3.
Akron lost their second game in a heartbreak fashion against North Florida 6-2.
The Zips were up 2-1 heading to the top of the seventh inning when errors and three hits gave UNF the lead and the win.
Games three and four were frustrating in the sense that our defense let us down making unusual mistakes, Jones said. Defense is normally our strong suit but it was not solid in either game, particularly in one inning in each game.
Shorter and Bauer both had a RBI for the Zips, while senior Kristen Hansen led the team batting 2-for-3 against UNF.
Sunday, the Zips lost 2-0 to Kennesaw State, but were able to out-hit their opponent with six hits.
The final game of the tournament was much more characteristic of our team from a defensive standpoint, but we failed to produce offensively, Jones said.
The Owls scored runs in the third and fourth innings, while the Zips were unable to put anything together.
Bauer pitched six complete innings giving up two earned runs and striking out seven.
On a good note, Bauer was named to the Buzz Classic’s all-tournament team batting over .500 with six stolen bases.
The Zips will return to the diamond March 14 when they play in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
