The University of Akron Zips kicked off their home stand against the Kent State Flashes on Friday.
The zips battle the flashes for last time this weekend, leaving the winner with bragging rights till fall.
The first game left the flashes at the bottom of a 15-7 final score at the end of the first game.
Right handed pitcher Frank Turocy took on the Flashes hitters in all nine innings throwing a total of 152 pitches.
Turocy who gave up four runs to Kent State in the first inning said his goal was to last as long as possible.
Sometimes I forget to use my legs, he said. Late in the game like that if I am using my whole body then my arm does start to hurt.
The tone of the game was that of playing catch up, each team trailed at one point only to come back and either tie or take the lead.
It was not until the fifth inning when John Turk hit his first collegant grand slam that the Zips were able to breathe a bit easier.
I was just trying to hit the ball hard, and it worked out well, Turk said of his grand slam. He also stated this is a great confidence booster and something he hopes to carry over into Saturday’s game.
Head coach for the Zips, Pat Bangtson, said this is a team that has learned to battle, including his starting pitcher.
That’s the first time we have extended him over 110 all year, Bangtson said. He works hard in the off season and he works hard after every start throughout the week and it obviously paid off for him today.
The Zips take on the Flashes again Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Lee Jackson Field.
