The Zips volleyball team who are off to a hot start at 7-4 and still have room for improvement.

We’ve played well against strong competition, head coach Ron Arenz said. Like every team, there are things individually and as a unit that we need to get better at.

Arenz also stressed the teams strong practice habitsm, We need to get better every day we are together in practice and competition.

The senior class is leading the charge, Arenz said. However, everyone plays a vital role in the success and shortcomings we experience this season, everyone understands that in order to achieve our goals, it must be done together.

The wins the Zips have compiled will prepare them heading into conference play which starts on Sept. 25 at Bowling Green.

The Akron Invitational kicked off Sept. 11 and the Zips swept both St. Francais (Pa) 3-0 and Bucknell 3-0.

The Zips struggled Sept. 12 losing to both West Virginia University 3-2 and Texas Christian University 0-3.

West Virginia and TCU have good records and this put the team to an overall record of 7-4.

The Zips also lost to North Dakota 1-3 and Ole Miss 0-3 earlier in the season.

We have the talent and the biggest challenge is to maximize those talents each time we face our opponents, Arenz said.

The Zips who have three tough games ahead of them in Northwestern, Cincinnati, and Long Island before they start MAC play.

We need to continue to improve the execution of the basic skills, if we lose sight of those details, staying competitive in tough matches will be difficult, Arenz said.

We can only influence those things that we can control, Arenz said looking forward to the rest of the season.

I can predict that we will improve as the season progresses and that we will continue to lay the foundation necessary for us to be top contenders in the MAC.

The Zips will play in the Wildcat Classic next and will start the tournament against Northwestern on Sept. 18.
