UA students given chance to choose Super Bowl commercial

February 2, 2012
This culmination of the National Football League’s season brings hoards of students together in front of their televisions. There is also a common knowledge that this athletic event is more than a game for the enjoyment of its massive audience. The Super Bowl offers advertisers of all sorts the opportunity to push their products to the entire nation. These commercials vary from the very funny to the very informative, all aiming to persuade their audience in some way. The University of Akron enters into this fray with a Super Bowl advertisement of its own.

University safety debacle: How safe are you in the Student Union elevators?

February 1, 2012
I find myself disturbed about my safety on campus. I’m not questioning the security of the campus; my fear lies solely in elevator safety. It sounds odd. I mean, how many times does one ride an elevator in a week?Regardless of how improbable, I found myself trapped in Elevator No. 4 in the Student Union for almost two hours on Sunday with two of my peers.

Starbucks Considers Sponsoring Republican Candidates

February 1, 2012
Politics, like the definition of a Santorum, is a filthy and sometimes frothy business. I heard recently that Starbucks, in a shrewd move that’s sure to please conservatives, has considered sponsoring a number of Republican presidential candidates with their own brands of frothy fun. For Rick Santorum, that Mighty Mouse of conservative ideals, Starbucks thought of going with their quintessential, non offensive, conservative drink, the Caffè Latte.

How to stay safe on campus

January 31, 2012
Living on campus can be a very exciting experience. To make sure your experience in a residence hall is all it can be, remember that part of the experience is feeling safe.

Societal Problem

January 31, 2012
On-campus housing prices can vary depending upon the type of dorm and meal plan you pick. A common theme with all of them is that you pay by the semester and are required to have a meal plan.

Explore your inner color

January 31, 2012
Taking a quick look around your dorm, what catches your eye first? Is it that bold comforter of yours, or that shaggy hot pink rug? Maybe it’s the electric blue lounge chair. None of the above? It seems you need a bit of an update. I can’t think of anyone who wants to sit in a drab dorm all day with white sheets, no posters and no color. Adding items to your dorm can not only help show visitors your personality, but, depending on the colors you choose, can also help set the atmosphere you want to portray.

SOPA /PIPA legislation coming to light: staff editorial analyzes recent censorship proposals

January 26, 2012
Last Wednesday, some popular websites made some very noticeable changes. Google featured a black censor box over its logo. The more informal informative website Wikipedia’s home page was completely blacked out, only able to be used through disabling Javascript. (I Googled that fact because I still have the “right” to.) These blackouts were in protest of two pieces of national legislation aiming to put a halt to online piracy. The Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) are both pieces of legislation that were recently proposed at a national level.

President Stephen Colbert

January 26, 2012
Nation, South Carolinians are speaking loud and clear. Granted, it’s in a slow southern drawl, a drawl that is only slightly faster than our University’s response to the shocking crime wave terrifying our campus that recently began a short 24 months ago.

“Rubbertop Review” Student submissions due Feb. 1

January 25, 2012
The University of Akron offers an outlet for writers who wish to publish their work. This chance allows students to express their creativity and accomplish a dream of being published.

Winter Fashion

January 25, 2012
Traditionally during the spring semester, students are usually just trying to stay warm and get to class as fast as they can to keep out of the cold weather. Clothing generally falls under the “sport apparel” category, and students bundle up in layers with their heaviest attire to battle the winter cold. This semester, however, I have noticed more and more students dressing stylishly warm, starting off spring semester with major fashion statements.

Party like a college student

January 25, 2012
It’s 1 a.m.; life is a whirlwind of colors. You are laughing about something that that bartender said. Your ears are ringing; the song “Levels” by Avicii is playing. People are pressed up against you; normally you are claustrophobic but it doesn’t seem to matter much tonight for some reason. You just dropped $20 at the bar, sipping on another long island. One of your “friends” is making out with an attractive guy in the corner while another is in the bathroom washing the X’s off her hands. You are having the time of your life.

Our View: Students find new ways to make winter even worse

January 25, 2012
By: Matthew Balsinger Every year there is little to look forward to in the winter months. One of the most enjoyable annual activities, however, is the Akron Ice-Fest, where current and former students of the University showcase their ice carving skills. Though these statues were made to represent pride in Akron, a few immature and deplorable students decided that it would be a good idea to destroy these works of art.

Dating Doctor diagnoses students' love problems

January 24, 2012
Despite the single-digit temperatures, The University of Akron was turning up the heat Wednesday night with David Coleman, who presented a few lessons on love and relationships at EJ Thomas. Hosted by the Resident Housing and Programming Board, the “Dating Doctor” made his second entertainment appearance at the Stage Door. A full house took part in the “Making Relationships Matter” seminar, which opened the doorways to improving the love lives of students across campus.

Diamond Delicatessen: A cut above the rest

January 24, 2012
As college students, good food and good food ideas are always a top priority. Luckily for us, downtown Akron houses a variety of restaurants for all tastes. Recently, I stopped in for lunch at the Diamond Delicatessen on South Main. I was met by an old-school atmosphere where the employees greet their customers by their first names and inquire about their business and family life. The Deli, which has been under its current ownership for nearly 15 years, strives to make their customer service personal across its vast clientele. Serving anywhere from 200-400 sandwiches a day, the Deli houses a fast-paced atmosphere without being dismissive of its customers.

UA organization Campus Focus changes meeting day: New Sunday time appeals to both graduates and current students

January 24, 2012
The beginning of a new semester is always a great time to start looking around your school and seeing what types of organizations The University of Akron has to offer. One organization that students may sometimes overlook is Campus Focus. Campus Focus is a student youth group held once a week at The Chapel, located on Fir Hill right next to campus. Previously held on Thursday nights, Campus Focus has made a move this semester to Sunday nights at 7 p.m.

Financial aid goes for a green future

January 24, 2012

Instead, awards for the 2012-2013 aid year will be available exclusively through the Student Center on student Zipline accounts, with the supplementary documents available in the department’s new Online Brochure.

Salsa Magic heats up UA's cold winter nights at EJ

January 24, 2012
The Stage Door at EJ Thomas was heating up Tuesday when the RHPB and RHC hosted Salsa Magic. Rhythm and music were all around as students were taught how to salsa dance by the hosts for this event, Salsa and Bachata instructors Lee El Gringuito Smith and Kat Aguilar. Bachata is a dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It can be either a choreographed routine or one that is improvised. Salsa dancing is a form of Bachata dancing. It is often associated with romance and heartbreak.

Goals for spring success

January 23, 2012
Recovering from fall semester is a tough transition. I like to think it like going to war: Most made it, but we still lost a few in battle. Now here we are, stronger and ready to face another semester of college. A new year means new goals and accomplishments. The best part about making academic goals for spring semester is having the time and the motivation to meet them.

Quarterback Tim Tebow: the NFL Christian splash bash

January 23, 2012
As the spring semester gets into full swing, the weather is getting bitter and tank tops, shorts and flip-flops are replaced by hoodies, sweatpants and Ugg boots. And just like the nice weather, the NFL football season is coming to a drastic close. In a season full of record-breaking quarterback play, none has made more of a splash than Tim Tebow. As a loyal ESPN watcher, no quarterback in the NFL has made more news since week six than Tebow. After putting up an 8-5 record as a starting quarterback for a team that was 1-4 before his first start, winning the AFC West and winning a playoff game, many could say that he has proved himself worthy of being able to play the position. That issue is still up for debate.

Ice carvers showcase their skills in annual event

January 19, 2012
The University of Akron’s ice carving team showcased their talents outside the Student Union yesterday, using chainsaws and other tools to carve into blocks of ice ranging from 300 to 1,200 lbs. Carvings included a hornet, a dragon, a giant throne for students to sit on and Zippy wearing a chef hat.

Letter to the Editor: University of Akron Police Department disappoints

January 18, 2012
I wanted to voice my displeasure and disappointment with The University of Akron Police Department. Toward the end of last semester, I was playing basketball at the rec center and had some valuables (gold chain, watch and smart phone) stolen out of my bag. I found my bag opened and searched through in a bathroom stall. After alerting the rec staff and filing a police report, I was immediately told by the officer that my belongings would most likely not be found and to let this be a learning lesson.

January 18, 2012

Titled “Human Nature,” this show consisted of large jewelry art pieces that showed how we as humans relate to nature with our bodies.

Mayan End of the World

Our View: Facking fracking

November 15, 2011
Chesapeake Energy is bringing jobs to Ohio. They’re buying up land and mineral rights throughout the state in preparation for one of the largest hydraulic fracking operations in the United States. Of course, those who sell their mineral rights to Chesapeake will be rewarded handsomely with a pay check every year for the use of their well. Sounds like an awesome deal considering the terrible state of our economy, and the greatest thing about it is that you don’t have to do anything or even worry about anything! That is, of course, if environmental health is not of your concern and you enjoy drinking bottled water.
