Last Wednesday, some popular websites made some very noticeable changes. Google featured a black censor box over its logo. The more informal informative website Wikipedia’s home page was completely blacked out, only able to be used through disabling Javascript. (I Googled that fact because I still have the “right” to.) These blackouts were in protest of two pieces of national legislation aiming to put a halt to online piracy. The Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) are both pieces of legislation that were recently proposed at a national level.

Financial aid goes for a green future

Trunk or Treat provides safe halloween for local children

Halloween is a time of spooks, tricks and treats. This year, for the students at Leggett Elementary School, a school that hasn’t had trick-or-treating in a decade, it was just that. The second annual Trunk or Treat event was held in the Leggett Elementary School gymnasium. With close to 400 students in attendance, it was a busy night for participating student organizations.

UA’s PRSSA Chapter Recognized Nationally

The University of Akron chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) received the Star Chapter Award from PRSSA Nationals on Oct. 16 at the PRSSA National Conference in Orlando, Fla. Akron’s chapter earned this award through an increased involvement in the community, an increased involvement with the Professional Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) chapter in the city of Akron and by taking part in PRSSA National initiatives, such as attending regional conferences and encouraging members to apply for scholarships through the organization.

Zombies invade Akron!

Fire Prevention Week: raising safety through awareness

Fire safety is getting a boost this week from the National Fire Protection Association's annual awareness campaign, Fire Prevention Week. U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 3,840 fires nationwide in dormitories and Greek housing each year. These fires are responsible for an annual average of three deaths, 38 fire injuries and $20.9 million in property damage.

Painting science into the landscape: topography and art combine in UA parking lot

This weekend, the parking lot of Folk Hall was closed for painting, but not for touching up parking spaces or filling in potholes. Instead, Akron’s ceramics professor Donna Webb and visiting scientist Jean-Marie Hartman (Rutgers, State University of New Jersey) were busy transforming the lot into a giant topographical map for the Synapse Project. According to painting professor Matthew Kolodziej, the Synapse Project, which started in 2007, is a collaboration between art and science. The project explores issues that touch on both disciplines and is open to not only all members of the University, but also to the general public.

Travel to foreign lands this summer

Ohio Burger makes changes

The changes, which include a repositioning of the line and register, additional menu offers and a new 99-cent promotion, were prompted in response to congestion in the Union and Catering Operation’s desire to compete with other on-campus eateries.

Greek Week benefits troops in the Middle-East

Every year the UA Greeks participate in an event called Greek Week which not only creates a unity among the diverse chapters but helps raise money for a good cause. This year the money raised by the event went to the Adopt-a- Platoon efforts where the Greek community committed to adopting a platoon in Iraq or Afghanistan. The adopted platoon will receive care packages every month for a year from the items and money raised by the participating National Pan-Hellenic Council, Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Inter-fraternal Council chapters.

Barnes and Noble College picturing a cure through social media

Social media is being used for social advancement at The University of Akron’s Barnes and Noble bookstore. A recent email was sent out to all UA students asking them to utilize Facebook for a good cause. For every student who changes his or her profile picture to a pink ribbon and becomes a fan of the Barnes & Noble College page, Barnes & Noble College will donate a dollar, with a maximum donation of $10,000, to the Youth Survival Coalition.

Local man walking in search of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease

At the age of 20, William Bohnak of Cuyahoga Falls is doing more than most people his age. He has already graduated from Fortis College with a degree in Criminal Justice, and is currently on a journey across the U.S. to raise money and find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Lights shine on for domestic violence victims

In observance of Domestic Violence Awareness month and to remember the victims who lost their lives as a result of domestic violence, the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit and Medina Counties is conducting two events this month: Purple Light Nights and Cut It Out. Purple Light Nights was first launched in Washington in Oct. 2007 by The Covington Domestic Violence Task Force.

Mastodons on The University of Akron's campus

The University of Akron is home to many hidden treasures that students may or may not be aware of. The Geology Department, located in Crouse Hall, is home to a mastodon skeleton found nearly 45 years ago in Fairlawn, Ohio. The specimen was originally found during a construction project and was first analyzed by University of Akron geologists Jim Teeter and Paul Wingard. The geologists would end up spending several months with students uncovering as much of the animal as they could find, which is now still on display at the University.

Hollywood comes to Akron: Pitch your own reality tv show

A hands-on reality show workshop is being hosted by The University of Akron School of Communication, Inda Blatch-Geib Productions and Joke Productions. The two-day workshop will teach the skills needed to sell a reality TV or documentary series to Hollywood. Participants will learn how to identify a compelling story, how to craft their presentations for the right network and how to pitch a marketable reality show or docu-series. At the end of the class, participants will have the chance to pitch a TV show or documentary.
